Sunday Star-Times

Discover East Auckland’s top experiences with this one-day itinerary

With summer approaching, it's the perfect time to head to East Auckland. Here's how to spend an exciting Sunday just a short drive from central Auckland.

-

East Auckland features rolling hills, walking tracks, a lively farmers’ market and stylish eateries. So, if you thought Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland was just the Sky Tower and Queen Street, think again! There’s plenty to discover just 40 minutes’ drive away. Or take the ferry from downtown Auckland to Half Moon Bay, which takes approximately 35 minutes.

Fuel your body for the day ahead

Set out early for The Clevedon Village Farmers’ Market, which opens at 8am every Sunday at the Clevedon Showgrounds just off Monument Road. Grab breakfast and have a yarn with one of the stall vendors. There are more than 60 stalls selling everything from seasonal produce, preserves, bread, confectionery to plants and flowers. Sample some renowned Clevedon buffalo cheese, or pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables and yummy picnic treats for later.

Have an outdoor adventure

Duder Regional Park is a little-known gem in East Auckland, but is a favourite with locals. There are a variety of walks to try, with varying lengths to suit depending on how much time you have, or the distance you prefer.

The 2km/30-minute Duder Coastal Walk is ideal for those who are after a short stroll, or try the 4.3km/2-hour Farm Loop Trail, which takes you through rolling farmland with amazing views of the Hauraki Gulf. The park allows visitors to get up close and personal with friendly farm animals while enjoying green pastures and a coastal outlook. For those who would like to do something slightly more adventurous, there is a cycle trail or orienteering course to explore.

If you’re after something more coastal, gorgeous Maraetai is a 7-minute drive along North Road past Duder Regional Park and the perfect spot for fish and chips. Maraetai in te reo Māori means “meeting place by the sea”, and you can enjoy wandering along Maraetai’s beautiful beach and watching locals fish off the wharf.

Treat yourself

Got little ones in tow who are hanging out for a sweet treat? Clevedon Strawberries, open Saturday and Sunday’s during summer, is a 20-minute drive back towards Clevedon if you continue on just past the farmers’ market. They’ve got delicious real fruit ice cream, freshly picked strawberries and coffee that make the perfect afternoon snack for those with a sweet tooth, young and old.

Kick back over a bite to eat

It’s about time for dinner, but you don’t need to head back to central Auckland just yet - there are plenty of great dining options out here.

Hallertau Clevedon is easy to find down Clevedon-Kawakawa Road. Book ahead to ensure you get a table, and enjoy some craft beer, woodfired pizza or sharing plates out in the beer garden. Plenty of non-alcoholic beverages are available for the sober driver in your group.

Or just a 12-minute drive from the centre of Clevedon, you’ll find John Hill Estate Vineyard and Restaurant. This boutique, family-run vineyard at the foot of the Hunua Ranges, is a relaxing location to enjoy the locally inspired menu.

Enjoy a cultural experience

Next time you head east, a must-visit is Howick Historical Village. Even though it has Howick in the name it’s actually in Pakuranga, located in the beautiful Lloyd Elsmore Park. Howick Historical Village is a re-creation of a New Zealand colonial village using buildings saved from the surrounding area. The buildings have been lovingly restored and give an excellent idea of the early settlement of the area, and there is a great cafe on site.
