Coping with overindulgence Beauty

- Harriet Pudney

I’ve never really been one for giving things up wholeheartedly. When people post on Instagram to say they’re quitting Instagram, when they give up coffee because they read a headline that says it’s going to kill them, I think ‘‘could not be me’’.

If you hate something, change it, and sometimes cold turkey is the way to go, but I think there’s a lot to be said for moderation. What about, doing something less? Consider engaging with social media to the extent you enjoy it, and stopping when you don’t.

This is a lesson I could do with learning for myself at the moment. The post-lockdown social boom is operating in tandem with the usual December madness, and I’m now spending half the week with a mild hangover. Not the kind where you want someone to hook you up to an IV drip and monitor your vital signs. Just a thin covering of dust over my whole self. Of course, I’m 30 now, and the amount of alcohol that can lead to these symptoms is infuriatingly small. Two wines on a

Wednesday and I’m ordering a toasted sandwich at 11am on a Thursday, before going out again that night. I literally did that this week and the sanga arrived with a single Berocca in the bag. They could just tell.

The point being, of course, that I’m spending a couple of nights a week trying to look nice while feeling a tiny bit worse for wear. A nice outfit and styled hair will take you a long way, but when trying to conceal a hangover, skincare and makeup become absolutely crucial. As key as paracetamol and very cold sparkling water, I would argue.

At present for me the star of the show is the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Dermallergo Serum, $55.95. This soothing, hydrating serum also counteracts redness, making it a real powerplayer in terms of hangover disguise. It leaves my skin looking bouncy, glowy and plump instead of thin, transparent and sad. Winner. It’s perhaps counterintuitive, but I like to go for less base coverage when I’m hanging. Heavy foundation seems to just sit on top of my skin on these occasions, so instead, I’ll spot conceal with something like the bare Minerals bareSkin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer, $42. Mascara, bronzer, and then a tinted balm like the Ultra Violette Sheen Screen SPF 50 Lip Balm, $26. Time to give ‘em the old razzle dazzle.
