Charming historic property

-

Set on a terraced parcel of 3017 square metres of land, ‘‘St Catherine’s’’ is set to the north just a stone’s throw from Picton’s main street and harbour.

The circa 1880s Victorian villa is set over two levels and was originally built for a sea captain’s mistress.

Forty years later, it was sold to the local Catholic Church and became known as St Catherine’s convent, a name it is still referred to as today.

This charming historic property has a heritage listing, as does a large Grandiflora Magnolia located on the expansive grounds.

St Catherine’s was purchased by its present owners over a decade ago when they were living in the United States. Their intention was to retire to Picton, however they haven’t had the opportunity to live in the property.

Instead, it has been tenanted while renovations and improvements have been undertaken to preserve the stately home’s character and ensure its continued structural integrity and beauty.

The large garden provides a glorious and colourful backdrop to the home.

It is low maintenance, but also offers a magnificent canvas for gardeners and those with a flair for landscaping and design to add their own personal touch.

Entry to the home is from the top of the road, where visitors are led to a gravelled parking bay. There is also a large double garage with auto door, and this has been constructed in keeping with the character of the property.

A path leads to the front entrance and beyond, with a grand foyer boasting a 4-metre stud and pressed tin ceilings; kauri timber skirtings, doors, floors and architraves; plus an Oregon staircase providing quite the welcome.

This is the present owner’s favourite part of the home, along with the large upstairs verandas. These can be accessed through either a beautiful stained glass door or through the two bedrooms on this floor, the owners say.

‘‘This home has everything we were looking for, but our circumstances have since changed and we are now moving to another country, therefore we have reluctantly decided to offer St Catherine’s to the market.’’

Views of the ocean and mountains, and the elevated property’s proximity to shops, schools, medical facilities and other services within very scenic and beautiful surroundings, which include a large garden, are just some of the features that drew them to the property.

Its many striking features include roof crosses reminiscent of St Catherine’s time as a convent, high pressed tin ceilings, uninterrupted views over the garden and beyond, and a comfortable design layout with plenty of space for all occupants to enjoy.

Another attraction for the

present owners was how close the property is to Wellington, via the regular return ferry service from Picton.

‘‘Picton is also close to other beautiful parts of the South Island, including Nelson, the wine producing districts, Blenheim, snow resorts, and other world-class natural attractions,’’ they say.

This property presents a rare example of a grand heritage home.

It would make the ideal home for families or active couples/ retirees looking for a change of pace and a unique lifestyle in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. For those looking for a business prospect, 123 Wellington St would make the perfect B&B, lodge or boarding house.
