Shot assailant dies

The man shot by police in Rotorua almost a fortnight ago has died in Waikato Hospital. He was Shargin Stephens, 35, of Rotorua. Police used pepper spray, then Tasered him three times, before they shot Stephens who was allegedly wielding a machete and high on methamphetamine at the time. The death will be referred to the coroner and an autopsy was to be conducted yesterday.
