Emergency housing trust $8500 richer after charity golf day

- HELEN HARVEY

A charity golf day raised more than $8000 for an emergency housing trust.

The event, which was held in November, was organised by Stephanie Murray Mortgages director Stephanie Murray to raise money for the Roderique Hope Trust.

The Trust, which was set up last year provide emergency housing for families in need for up to 12 weeks, was a great cause, Murray said after this week handing over the cheque.

‘‘It’s a new trust and a new charity. It’s hard out there. They are unique and don’t get much funding.’’

It was the first time she had organised the golfing event, but hoped to make it an annual fundraiser for the trust.

People paid $200 to play in a team of four at the ambrose tournament, which was played at the Fitzroy Golf Club.

‘‘We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the response to the tournament. The goal for this year is $10,000.’’

Roderique Hope Trust spokeswoman Michelle Ramage said they were ‘‘grateful and thankful’’.

‘‘The money is incredible, but (Murray’s) ongoing support is amazing. It hasn’t been the easiest four months and her support has been second to none.’’

Last year the Trust changed its mind about renting a property in Tainui St after some of the neighbours objected.

Ramage said they were ‘‘absolutely blown’’ away at Murray’s generosity and that of the people who played in the tournament.

‘‘We’re honoured to be part of it.’’
