Girls become boys and vice-versa

- KRIS BOULT

Sebastian Lambert’s mum always wanted another girl and yesterday she got one - for a day.

The 11-year-old Eltham School student was among about 100 youngsters taking part in Opposites Day, an opportunity to dress up and raise money for the Eltham fire brigade who are taking part in the annual Sky Tower challenge on May 13.

The idea, initially suggested by a group of 12 and 13 year olds, saw boys dressed as girls and girls as boys, with a few farm animals thrown in to the mix.

‘‘Yea, my mum always wanted another girl,’’ Sebastian said.

With painted nails and wearing a sparkly blue dress with a blonde wig he was quick to mock his friend Zach Renshaw.

‘‘Have you got lipstick on?’’ he quizzed.

All the money raised by the school goes to help support people with leukemia, blood cancer diagnosis and assist with their treatments.

Asked if some of the boys were reluctant to dress up as girls, principal Kathryn Pick said that most had no problem with the one-day change.

‘‘Some are always reluctant but no, overly it’s pretty good.

‘‘There’s different interpretations of opposites too.’’

While awkward for some, student Keegan Lizzell,12, dressed in a bright red tutu and admitted it was not the first time he’d worn a dress.

‘‘I got my clothes from my sis- ter’s wardrobe but I’ve worn a dress before,’’ he said.

Rebekah Hodge, 12, also had some help from her siblings, borrowing her older brother’s high school uniform.

‘‘I got it off his bedroom floor. He’s at Stratford High’’ she said.

Ryan Bain had a totally different take on Opposites Day. He was one of three that wore their clothes inside out and backwards, but later admitted his approach might have been one of desperation.

‘‘It was a bit of a struggle to find things,’’ he said.

Pick said the small school had previously held a wacky hair that had gone down equally as well as the Opposites Day.
