Teams set for demolition derby

- JARROD MACBETH

There promises to be plenty of action on the track at Stratford Speedway tonight when demolition derby racing of a different type takes place.

Demolition derby teams racing is the feature event at the meeting and between the seven teams that have entered the event, nine team’s races will take place.

The track was super smooth and fast at the last meeting and it is looking like being the same for this event.

This will help the drivers to put on a good show as they will be able to pick up good speed in their modified old road cars and get in some good destructive hits on their opponents.

Each team has five drivers and a spare car if they destroy one. Many of the drivers who make up the teams are either regular demolition derby competitors or regular speedway competitors in the more mainstream classes.

Of the seven teams, Dad’s Army will start the event as favourite. The team – Steve Reed, Cheyanne Reed, Daniel Reed, Karl Jackson and Roderick Stevenson – are experienced.

They compete yearly at the Easter demolition derby teams meeting in Palmerston North where they often feature at the top of the podium.

Roger’s Rebels team could be capable of providing stiff competition to Dad’s Army. The Rebels team is made up of regular demolition derby drivers Michael Strattton, Roger Dettling, Regan Jordan, Reece Jordan and Matt Hill.

Their experience in derbies will ensure that they know what they are doing on the track. The five other teams that will be taking part are Munter Motorsport, Bad Intentions, Top of the Line, JYD and Just Whatevers.

All teams will have two races n the first round, after which their points will be tallied.

The two highest points scoring teams will face each other in the final for overall honours and the biggest chunk of prize money.

The next two highest points scoring teams will race each other for third and fourth place.

Meanwhile, a strong field of 23 stockcar competitors will race for the Best Pairs event.

Competitors will be randomly drawn into pairs and will collect points throughout the night based on their finishing positions which are then combined with their pairing partner.

The adult ministock class will also race for their Best Pairs event with a field of 20 competitors.

Full contact is not permitted in this class like it is for the stockcars but close racing can still be expected.

A field of 10 minisprints will also race as a support class on the night. A surprise entrant in the line-up is former popular midget racer Lydia Dickinson.

She has purchased Sean Rice’s former New Zealand Championship winning car and she will provide good competition to regular front runners Karl Uhlenberg, Shaun Dickie and Palmerston North’s Shane Dewar.

Racing gets under way at 7pm.
