Rugby from North, South, West and Central Fours added for world champs

The 42nd annual Ross Brown primary schools rugby tournament starts today in Hawera.

Hosted by the Southern Rugby Club, the tournament features four teams from North, Central, West and South Taranaki.

The tournament is run on a round robin basis with matches today through to Sunday.

The first game kicks off at 11am when Central play West, while the second match today is at 1pm featuring South against North. Thirteen boat classes will be represente­d by the Kiwis in Florida in September, with no changes of note to the crews and individual­s that contested two World Cup events in Europe earlier this year.

New Zealand didn’t send coxless four boats to those regattas but have bolstered their squad for Sarasota, Florida, with the women’s four becoming a new Olympic event for Tokyo 2020.

Six members of the NZ team at the recent under-23 world champs have joined the elite senior team, with Charlie Rogerson and Phillip Wilson graduating from the U23 men’s eight to the men’s coxless four and reserve men’s pair respective­ly.

The team, which had great success at the World Cups in Poland and Switzerlan­d, will be spearheade­d by the likes of men’s single sculler Robbie Manson, the women’s pair of Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergas­t, men’s double scullers Chris Harris and John Storey and the women’s eight.
