Floyd: To Conor with glove

- MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Floyd Mayweather has given Conor McGregor a huge boost by agreeing to fight using lighter gloves when the duo clash on August 26.

Mayweather has decided he wants to wear eight-ounce gloves instead of the normal 10 ounces according to a post on his Instagram account.

It is an interesting move from the US fighter, with Mayweather and McGregor fighting at 154 pounds, with regulations stating that 8-ounce gloves cannot be used in bouts contested at more than 147 pounds.

Irish fighter McGregor is used to using 4-ounce gloves in MMA, with the lighter gloves placing a higher emphasis on punching power and likely to give him an advantage when the pair square off.

‘‘McGregor, let’s fight in 8-oz gloves. Don’t believe what you hear in the media. Don’t believe what you hear on blog sites. If it’s not coming directly from me, then it’s not true,’’ Mayweather wrote on Instagram.

‘‘I’ll be wearing 8-oz Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate‘‘

Mayweather has only fought at 154 pounds in three of his 49 bouts – against Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez. He wore 10-ounce gloves for each of the victories.

‘‘We are prepared to destroy Floyd. Pick whatever size gloves you want as well little man,’’ McGregor wrote on Instagram. ‘‘I fight with 4oz. I don’t give a f... about the size of the glove. I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands.’’

According to the official MMA Fighting website, Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett said both fighters would need to present their case at the commission’s next meeting on August 16.
