St Peter’s edge out Boys’ High

- CHRISTOPHER REIVE

Webster Field was left looking a little worse for wear yesterday after New Plymouth Boys’ High School’s first XI went down 3-1 in their exchange match against St. Peter’s College.

In wet and windy conditions, both sides struggled to stay on their feet at times, however the side from Cambridge made the most of their first-half chances to come away with the result.

Playing in their second match in as many days, after taking on Francis Douglas memorial College on Wednesday, St. Peter’s opened the scoring through William Stephen who made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Boys’ High started the fixture aggressively, but after seeing off their early attempts to penetrate the defensive line, St. Peter’s began to control the play.

The visitors went 2-0 up on the 20-minute mark after a good initial save by Boys’ High’s Daniel Cleland kept a strong shot out, he was unable to recover before a supporting striker claimed an easy tap in.

St. Peter’s were well in control of the match at this point, applying pressure all over the pitch and not letting their hosts relax.

They were in again just before half time when Stephen played a pinpoint cross into the box to team mate Jamie Shipman, who headed it home.

Down 3-0 at half-time, Boys’ High needed to be the next to score. However, St. Peter’s maintained their dominance to open the half.

They could have been in a few more times as they did all the hard work to get free but were unable to make the final pass to put a striker away.

Because of this, Boys’ High were able to score next late in the match through a counter attack, well put away by Pacey Healy.

However, the visitors had done all they needed to claim the result, leaving town with a two-goal win.
