Undefeated season in reach for Moturoa

- CHRISTOPHER REIVE

With just two rounds left to play, Moturoa cannot be caught at the top of the Taranaki premier football ladder.

As the season edges closer to its end, Moturoa’s victory tour stops off at Onuku Taipari Domain today for a match against FC Western. While they could get complacent, with the title locked up and a record of 16 wins, no draws and no losses, an unbeaten season is just two wins away. It’s a feat that hasn’t been achieved for at least five years.

For Moturoa to achieve it, they’ll have to go through the side who have given them their toughest match all year. FC Western looked in position to claim an upset win in their last encounter but two late Moturoa goals saw them leave with the result.

Elsewhere, New Plymouth Rangers host Woodleigh, Peringa host Eltham, and New Plymouth Boys’ High School host Inglewood.

A win for Rangers would see them remain in the hunt for third, while Peringa will need to upset second-placed Eltham if they’re to avoid the wooden spoon.

All premier men’s matches kick off at 2.45pm today.

In the men’s Federation League, Rangers have the bye.

The Taranaki women’s league has a similar feeling to it as it season winds down, as Waitara have already locked up the title.

They will host Inglewood tomorrow, looking to add to their already stellar points total for the season.

The battle for second on the ladder should be won and lost this weekend, with Moturoa and Hawera, second and third respectively, facing off. Just two points separate the sides heading into the match.

Elsewhere, Peringa will play Rangers. All women’s matches kick off at 10am tomorrow.
