Hairdresser off to style stars at Fashion Week
Taranaki hairdresser Amie Mckoy can’t wait to get amongst the backstage chaos at New Zealand Fashion Week.
The 22-year-old, who works at New Plymouth’s Lola Hair Studio, has been accepted to be part of the Redken fashion team, styling models’ hair for shows.
‘‘I think it will be mayhem, I think it will be quite busy.’’
McKoy said while it would be a hectic environment she was looking forward to the challenge and bringing fresh ideas back to the salon.
‘‘I’m pretty confident in my ability to do it and pull through.
‘‘It will be cool to see what is on the catwalk and then bring it back to the salon and kind of do our interpretation that you can wear on the street.’’
Mckoy attended fashion workshops before being selected to take part in the event and said it had always been a goal to work at Fashion Week.
‘‘It was exciting to get into a Redken salon because I knew they were partnered with lots of different fashion designers and companies.
Hairdressing had always been a passion, McKoy said.
‘‘As a little girl my dad, obviously when he was young, thought he was a bit of a rock star and had long hair and I would always dress him up with clips and give him these whacky hair styles.’’
McKoy did her apprenticeship at the same saloon as New Plymouth’s Patrick Cameron, who is acknowledged by his peers as the world’s leading long hair expert, and she said she’d like to follow in his footsteps.
‘‘He is nice, really cool and a really inspiring man.
‘‘That would like be a top goal but he is pretty hard to live up to.’’
