An awfully impressive show

-

appealing as a family show.

From the distance and safety of our seats, we experienced the harsh brutality and futility of war.

Peppered with facts, information and explanations, both young and old learned a lot - especially that war was not the big adventure many soldiers thought it would be.

The harsh truth was presented in a fun, whimsical way which worked superbly.

There was lots of comedy, singing and squabbling as four very talented cast members played like children re-enacting battles, people and places.

Even our Taranaki hero Lieutenant Colonel Malone made an appearance.

Delightful costumes such as stainless steel bowls, giant-sized moustaches, an array of hats and trunks full of clothes took on new identities.

Seeing the hill of Chunuk Bair emerge from a bundle of clothing was spectacular.

It was fascinating to then watch the shadows of toy soldiers ascend the hill.

The scene of a conscientious objector being tortured was very effective.

With amazing acting, fun props, quirky costuming, realistic sound and lighting effects, this show was moving and memorable.

It was also a masterpiece of strategy, visualisation, characterisation, coordination and splitsecond timing. If only the war had been so well planned!

This is a show that works on so many levels. It is fun, poignant, very educational and an outright winner.
