Sharks finding form on the field at the right time

- CHRISTOPHER REIVE

It’s taken a couple of matches but the Taranaki Sharks are starting to find their stride heading into this weekend’s clash against the Manawatu Mustangs.

The match, which is likely to be the Sharks’ only big fixture of the year, comes on the back of two warm-up games against Te Atiawa and Nga Ruahine.

‘‘We got through those games, which were both very physical,

well,’’ Sharks coach Alan Jackson said.

While the rust showed, the Sharks pulled out two wins, looking to make it three this weekend.

Manawatu come into the match after falling to Te Atiawa last weekend, however Jackson said he wasn’t reading too much into the result.

‘‘I think they are in the same situation as us, with guys who haven’t play for four or five weeks and needed the game. It’s all about play a game to prepare for a game.’’

The Sharks come into match with a healthy squad.

‘‘We don’t want our neighbours beating us. Training was good on Tuesday and it’s going to be a good match.’’

Jackson said Manawatu’s squad this year was full of young and exciting talent who he has the seen coming up through the various age groups.

The Taranaki side will boast a strong squad too, with a good mix of youth and experience.

For the Sharks, the match will likely be their only provincial match this season. They were scheduled to take on Hawke’s Bay next weekend, but the side from the Bay have pulled out.

‘‘It’s a bit disappointing. We’ve been together four weeks now and are starting to find our way,’’ Jackson said.
