5 things Netflix should do

- BLAYNE SLABBERT

The best thing about Netflix is the smorgasbord of entertainment it presents for subscribers. But the all-you-can-eat buffet is also the worst thing, as it makes it difficult to find something to watch.

I’ve spent the length of a TV show scrolling through all the movies and shows looking for something that grabs my attention.

To make it easier for me, and hopefully others, this is what I’d like from Netflix.

Everyone has a type of movie that has no interest for them. For some, it’s science fiction, for others it might be documentaries.

It’d be great to block certain genres out so you’re not presented with types of programmes that you’re never going to watch.

I know that may remove some of the serendipity of discovering shows but I’d prefer a more trim homepage.

This leads on to a similar request. I’m never going to watch Gilmore Girls so why can’t I stop it clogging up my Netflix homepage?

If I could edit shows and movies from my homepage, I’d be able to streamline my viewing choice process and make it easier to find the good stuff.

I find the ratings that Netflix uses confusing. I’d like to see other ratings used, such as the one from Metacritic.

Its system is based on reviews from a range of critics and is one of the easiest ways to quickly gauge if a movie or show is worth a closer look. I’d like to be able to send and receive a recommendation from friends and family. It’d be neat to see a note appear under a show listing that indicates someone you know thinks you might enjoy it too. This feature, added to Netflix’s rating and along with something from Metacritic, would make it easier to find shows to watch. It’d be nice to be able to do this from your Netflix homepage or from apps on streaming devices and smart TVs.

At the moment, you have to go to the Netflix website, go to Account and then ‘‘Viewing activity’’ to remove shows.

I often start a movie or show to see what it’s like and if you don’t want to continue watching it, then it hangs around until the next time I’m on my computer.
