Wood’s instincts are on target

-

All Whites striker Chris Wood is backing his instincts as he seeks to do ‘‘great things’’ in the English Premier League with Burnley.

The 25-year-old has scored goals in his first two games for the Lancashire club since a $26.4 million move from Championship club Leeds United.

He scored the winner on his home debut against Crystal Palace last Sunday (Monday NZ Time) in his first EPL start after netting to earn a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

Wood has now scored five goals in his last three games - including a hat-trick in the All Whites’ 6-1 World Cup qualifying series win over the Solomon Islands in Auckland.

The in-form forward said his winning goal against Palace felt ‘‘fantastic’’.

‘‘Hopefully I can go on and do great things here and be a great name in a Burnley shirt and I’m looking forward to doing that together,’’ Wood said in a Claret Player video on Burnley’s club website.

‘‘Normally as a striker you have first instincts and your first thought is the right one, and it was [on Sunday].

‘‘It’s one off the back, especially at home. It’s nice that I can tick that off and now I can focus on a lot more things, both for myself and the team. Hopefully I can go onto more and bigger things.’’

Burnley are seventh on seven points and Wood hopes they can maintain their momentum.

‘‘After international breaks you don’t know how teams are going to start, so it’s nice we have kicked on and hopefully go on a good run in this little period before the next break.

‘‘It is a good start, but that’s all it is. There’s a long way to go in this Premier League season and we are going to fight like anything to make sure we are doing what we can and make sure we are pointing up that league.’’
