51A UPJOHN STREET, BROOKLANDS

-

Viv and Trev love the fact that their house is tucked away off the street at 51a Upjohn St, and offers them both a peaceful sunny outlook across the courts and to the green of the tall Brooklands Park bush beyond. The benefits of the location, including a wealth of birdlife, are manifold. “It feels quite private,” Trev adds.

“It was only a year old when we bought it,” Viv recalls. “We loved it. We couldn’t find anything else that had the quality.”

We love walking and walk every day and for us it’s just 10 minutes to the Bowl of Brooklands, and a 10-minute walk through the park to the centre of town. There are even glow-worms through there. The grandkids just love it.”

The attractively planted driveway, where the libertia grandiflora’s white flowers are in profusion, is an introduction to the well-designed and easily maintained outdoor spaces they have developed around their home. There’s also a little vege or flower garden with lemon and mandarin trees. Underfoot, the pathways are all exposed aggregate concrete, making for a very tidy look.

The 2004 built home has two double bedrooms downstairs, while the spacious master bedroom, walkin wardrobe and ensuite are upstairs. Downstairs, near the front door, there is also a study or office which could easily act as a smaller bedroom. There are ample living spaces in this spacious home. Through the big front door, with its glass panels either side, is a large tiled foyer leading through to the kitchen, which is perfectly positioned at the heart of the house. This is the space where they spend the most time, according to Viv.

Beyond the island bench is a big bay window with comfy sofas and it is here that they entertain as it so easy to interact with guests. We tend to only go into the lounge for television.”

It is an added bonus that the sun streams through the big north-facing windows in these open-plan family and dining areas. And the spaces open on to a beautifully landscaped patio and a series of outdoor spaces where careful planning has allowed a choice of alfresco areas to sit, have your coffee or savour your barbecue.

Back inside, the kitchen is well-appointed. There are two sinks and a waste disposal in the island bench, a dishwasher, wall oven and ceramic cooktop with a stunning red glass splashback. This contrasts well with the dark-grey patterned tiles and stylish. Abovebench shelving with convenient stacking doors in a contemporary woodgrain-look panelling. There’s plenty of extra wide drawers under the cooktop, and additional cupboard space. Even the breakfast bar in the island bench has its own cabinets in the front. Comfort is built in as well - the kitchen and bathrooms have underfloor heating. The water is heated with Infinity gas and there’s a big free-standing gas-fired heater which pours out the warmth.

The separate lounge has two sets of internal French doors allowing it to be closed off from the remainder of the living spaces and it is wired for surround sound. The family bathroom featuring a spa bath is fully tiled and has a heat lamp overhead. The base of the shower here and in the ensuite is an artistic contrasting pebble surface which the couple say has a nice feel underfoot. There’s a separate room for the toilet. Under the stairs is a wealth of room for storage and there are double cupboards and a linen cupboard.

The extra-large internally accessed double garage also has lots of storage cupboards, plus a good sized laundry bench with cupboards underneath. The sink even has its own filtered water tap. The garage door to the back yard reveals a tidy garden shed and a big retractable clothes line.

Up the well-spaced carpeted stairs is the stunning master bedroom surrounded by windows to take in all the views.

“It’s nice up here,” Viv says. “We can often see the fireworks from here when they are on at the Bowl.” And on a good day, the summit of the mountain can be seen peeking over a stand of trees in the distance. All-important light control is made possible by slatted wooden blinds.

This is an appealing parents’ retreat that could also offer alternative uses. “You could use it as a guest wing up here,” Viv suggests.
