Bell Block’s little (barber) shop of horrors

- DEENA COSTER

Walking in to find your barber with a pair of scissors embedded in her head would be a hair-raising experience for most people.

But instead of screams, laughter was the order of the day for clients of Bell Block Barbers, whose workers had gone the extra mile to get into the Halloween spirit yesterday.

This included barber Ani Manukonga’s fake scissor injury and gory wound to her neck.

The shop’s owner Tanz Johns said she always made an effort to dress up on October 31 - the global day which celebrates all things spooky. ‘‘It’s just a bit of fun,’’ Johns said.

‘‘The customers love it.’’ Johns said customers were often taken aback when they walked into the shop and found them in fancy dress. ‘‘They just walk in and have a bit of a laugh and tell us we look scary.’’

In preparation, Johns and her workmate experimented with make-up and costume ideas at the weekend and hit the shops for some Halloween props.

Johns and her employees don’t just make an effort on Halloween either. Next Tuesday, they will will don fascinators in honour of the Melbourne Cup and clients can expect a bit of flair around Christmas time as well.

Along with those out trick or treating yesterday evening, hundreds of children turned out to Light Parties, held at numerous locations around the region.

The events, often run by churches, offered games, lollies, food and activities to those wanting a positive alternative.
