Quiz night will have a foodie feel

- CHRISTINA PERSICO

It may be the cheapest degustation ever and it’s all for a good cause.

New Plymouth Boys’ High School are holding a Taste Test and Quiz Night tomorrow to raise money for the Taranaki Women’s Refuge. For each of the eight rounds, contestants are served food and questions based around that dish, owner/operator of ABC Catering Ant Bates said.

‘‘The questions are based on what people are eating, origins of the food, list of ingredients and some fun facts,’’ he said.

Tickets for the eight-course meal, including entrees, salad, main and dessert, cost $25, or $135 for a table of six, with all proceeds going to the women’s refuge.

Seismic Events are also involved and partner Adrian Ellmoos said a lot of people considered themselves foodies.

‘‘Food and food knowledge has come a long way,’’ he said.

Four year-12 leadership students have been involved in the organising process and NPBHS culture director Evan Davies said the boys had also been involved in the street appeal for women’s refuge, and this was a way to take it a step further.

‘‘We care about their education but the most important thing is that these guys develop empathy for the people in their community,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s the school saying we held this event here because we’re part of the community; we have a responsibility to the community.’’

Callum Shimmin, 16, the ‘organising guru’, said it wasn’t too challenging to coordinate.

‘‘I guess as a single-sex school it’s a good way to show that we do care about the women and children of Taranaki,’’ he said.

Anton Besseling, 17, said students were showing they wanted to get out and help their community. It was all worthwhile to change even one person’s opinion, he said.

‘‘We’ve taken our stand against family violence, that Boys’ High doesn’t tolerate that stuff.’’

Daniel McWatters, 17, did a lot of the advertising and said a quote of his mum’s applied to what they were doing.

‘‘She says to change the world you’ve got to make a change in your own backyard.’’

Taranaki Women’s Refuge relationships manager Shona Smith said it was great to see the boys taking a stand against domestic violence.

‘‘These are the future husbands and dads,’’ she said.
