Centre not side

Our vital road north is having steel barriers erected on the road sides. It seems to some of us a questionable purpose. Perhaps to protect the river, farm fences or farmland or perhaps these administrators of roading have never had any road accidents.

If they are for safety, it’s the oncoming vehicle that is the danger and it’s danger to life. An off-road crash is easier to survive from. These should be in the centre of the road even if to make the road narrower.

Not fair for all

The present economic system no longer provides a fair go for all. The rich are getter richer at the expense of everyone else. It is time to develop a system which puts people before profits.

The concept of stewardship, which already operates successfully in many areas of the community, needs to be expanded to encompass all sectors.

The TSB Bank is a classic example of how stewardship economics operates in the business sector. The thousands of parents who bring up their children so well are another example of excellent stewardship.

In similar vein are all those wonderful people who spend so much time caring for the environment. It would be great if all government departments, local bodies, non-government organisations and individuals could catch the vision and make their own contribution.

Together, we could make New Zealand the envy of the world. Everyone has a part to play.

Missing the local

A recent article about Bingo. Well, a few years ago Radio Coast with Bryan Vickery had a housie competition, all the town of Hawera joined in, the businesses gave customers sheet and numbers. The people of the town still miss our local radio station.

Hawera is booming and new arcades opening. New World supermarket was a big loss for the town. No traffic lights or parking meters. We have a beautiful park, Tawhiti Museum, Elvis Presley Museum, Fonterra and Silver Ferns, the beautiful mountain - the view from Patea’s main street is just amazing.

Pleasing outcome

It was pleasing to read our Mayor and councillors have sorted out the much awaited footpath extension to enable mobility scooters, bikes etc to have access to the valley complex from Bell Block.

Good move

The move to reimage the film ‘‘All the money in the world’’ by scrubbing out Kevin Spacey and replacing him with Christopher Plummer is a positive in that the accused, although not yet convicted, Spacey should not be presented in any positive manner.

This is only a small step as the truth must be found, and after conviction of any guilty individuals appropriate and significant punishments must be given. This also a time for proactive action so that prevention becomes the priority.

The majority of people are good and should be protected and the few who take the wrong path must have the gate shut behind them.
