The Taranaki Daily News Taranaki Sportspers­on of the Year is being held in New Plymouth tomorrow night. We take a look at some of the nominees.

Masters athlete of the year: Alison Cole

At the World Masters Games 2017, Cole won medals in every event she competed in. She gained eight gold and two silver medals in the two discipline­s of surf lifesaving and kayaking. She also competes internatio­nally in kayak sprints and ocean marathon races.

Eric Kemsley

Kemsley consistent­ly performs to a high level at all the events he enters and is incredibly driven to succeed in the sport of race walking. He is ranked first in New Zealand for many race walking distances and holds a national record. He has also achieved world rankings competing at the World Masters Track & Field Championsh­ips 2017.

Barbara Scott

Scott has had an incredible year with a long list of achievemen­ts. She attended the World Masters Games and won four golds, holds a 40m record and has a world ranking of fifth, Oceania Masters ranking of second and is one of only two women to have qualified for the Archery Open World Championsh­ips in Mexico City.

Lauren Hann

At the age of 62 Hann qualified for the World Half Ironman Championsh­ips after breaking the six hour mark for the first time and winning her age group at the Taupo Half Ironman. She has travelled and competed on the internatio­nal ironman/ multisport stage.

Taranaki 70+ Women’s Tennis Team

The team worked together, achieving a high level of fitness and dedication to the sport. The team won the 2017 Tennis NZ National Senior Teams Event – Women’s 70+ National Team Champions. The team includes Marlene Foreman, Jeanette Harding, Laurel Hatchard and Pam Wray.
