Last week’s men’s and women’s champion of champions tournaments proved to be very successful for the Inglewood Golf Club.

At the women’s event, played at Kaitake, the Inglewood team of Chris Wilson, Maree Messenger and Jill Evans combined to win the Rosebowl team event.

The trio scored a total of 120 gross stableford points to finish four points ahead of runners-up Manaia.

The individual honours were spread evenly amongst the clubs. Debbie McCallum (156), of Te Ngutu, won the silver division ahead of Wilson (161). The bronze one title went to Urenui’s Kay Wyatt with a two round total of

182, one stroke better the Messenger.

The bronze two, played over

18-holes was won by Manaia’s Dinny Gibbs (97) with Stratford’s Mary McQuay (99) finishing second.

❚ The men’s champion of champions was played at Fitzroy on Saturday.

Conditions at the course proved challenging all day with sunshine and a strong south-easterly making putting particularly tough.

Inglewood senior champion Kerry Otene carded rounds of 72 and 67 for a three over par 139, just managing to hold off playing partner Mark Kennard (73-67-140) who was representing New Plymouth.

Brian Rowland, playing at his home course, was the best net in the seniors (72-5 -67 and 74-5-69-136).

The intermediate title went to Fitzroy’s Clint McKenzie-Nicholas who, despite losing three balls in his morning round, shot an 81 and followed it up with a 74 in the afternoon to finish eight strokes ahead of his nearest rival for the title, Eltham’s Ryan Joll (82-81-153).

Best net of the day in intermediate section was recorded by Inglewood’s Andrew Castles (83-15-68) and (79-15-64-132).

In the junior division, Eltham’s Russell Butler (84-86-170) overhauled Inglewood’s Cliff Edgecombe (81-90-170) to win the title. Westown’s Shane Robbertsen (92-21-71-86-21-65-136) had the best net in the junior division.

Inglewood’s trio of Otene, Castles and Edgecombe gave the club the Vin Young Trophy with a team net score of 410, seven strokes ahead of Fitzroy.

The men’s and women’s rep sides had their final warm up before next month’s Toro Interprovincials at Belmont Golf Club on Sunday against teams from Manawatu-Wanganui.

Playing in strong winds, the women, who were competing for the Caroline Scott Memorial Challenge Trophy, had an impressive 8-4 win.

All but one of the morning singles went Taranaki’s way as they won 5-1.

Stand out performances came from Joanne McDonald, who was at even par when she won her game 5/4, and Rochelle Keegan, who fought back from three down to win the last four holes to win her match 1up.

The afternoon reverse singles were a lot closer with the teams winning three matches each, with wins to Keegan, Kaye Maree Mihaljevich and Debbie McCallum to give the trio a 100 per cent record.

The men were equally successful, although the Manawatu-Wanganui men’s held a small lead after round one 31⁄2 -21⁄2. However, Taranaki finished strongly, winning the afternoon reverse singles 41⁄2 -11⁄2 to win 7-5 overall.

Stand outs for the men were Fletcher Broderick and Brook Gray, who was covering for Monte Burmester. Both had two wins each.
