Memorial disgrace

-

As a former resident of the area I recently enjoyed a pleasant return to South Taranaki. The weather was excellent, the mountain was spectacular, the sea was blue and the countryside was as lovely as I can ever recall. However, these observations were somewhat tarnished by my visit to Turu Turu - Mokai. The site is a disgrace to those who live in and around it and have some knowledge and understanding of its significance. Difficult to access, overgrown with weeds and trees, stone work and bridges collapsing and no sign of any maintenance whatsoever it is nothing like I remember it when I was last walked its paths and roadways over 40 years ago. I found a hand-painted sign directing visitors to the ‘Pakeha Memorial’ offensive and strongly suspect those who have influence on the upkeep and preservation of this old battle site have never had relatives living in the United Kingdom. No one can change the past and surely it is now time to put an end to perceived social injustices and pandering to unsubstantiated historic grievances and start paying proper respect to historic places such as this one. This is a wonderful country of ours and it needs to be enjoyed and respected by all New Zealanders. What happened at Turu Turu - Mokai was tragic and sad - any incident that results in the loss of lives always is - but it is now a solid stone in the foundation of our society and helps form us into who we are. I hope that there is some restoration planned for this spot by the council and it is returned to a place for relaxation and reflection. A place to enjoy. It would be of great shame to the local community if nothing is done and the current rate of neglect continues to accelerate its decline. W. P. Smith
