Incognito the safest way to go

- BLAYNE SLABBERT

Every time you use a web browser, your online movements are tracked and that data may then be sold. You, as an internet user, are a product that helps tech companies make money.

The good news is that it’s easy to ‘‘hide’’ some of what you’re doing online by using the incognito mode on your browser.

Each browser has the feature though each has a different name – Chrome (Incognito), Edge (InPrivate), Safari (Private) and Firefox (Private Browsing).

Using the mode will erase your browsing and search history and delete any cookies (small files which are stored on your computer and used by websites to target ads at you).

You should also use private mode on a browser when you’re using a work computer to go online. Your employer would still be able to find out what site you’re looking at but any colleagues using your computer after you wouldn’t see your history. This same principle applies if you’re using a public computer at a library or hotel.

However, incognito mode does have its limitations. Your internet provider can still see what you’re looking at online. If you want to keep that a secret, then you’ll need a virtual private network (VPN).

Also, pop-up windows can still appear, and any bookmarks you make will still be saved in the browser.

And if you have logged into a website such as Facebook, it’ll still recognise and track you if you are in private mode.

But despite these limitations, it’s still worth using incognito mode while browsing. Also, it takes so little effort. You don’t need to install any programs or doing anything too techy.

There are plenty of instructions available online but typically it involves clicking File > Open Incognito Window, instead of clicking File > Open Window.

Using it will also make you more aware of how you operate online and to learn about how websites access and use your data.
