Millionaire pacer under offer

-

The fastest miler to race in Australasia, Have Faith In Me, is the subject of intense buyer interest.

Following on from his two unplaced runs in the Perth Inter Dominions in the past week, his owners, Dennis and Mark Dunford of Auckland, have resolved to sell the son of Bettor’s Delight. He clocked 1min 47.5 sec in winning the Miracle Mile last year.

The 2015/16 New Zealand Pacer of the Year has won in excess of $1.5m in stakes and lists the Miracle Mile, Auckland Cup, Chariots of Fire, New Zealand Derby and Northern Derby among his feature race wins.

The Dunfords are currently weighing a number of offers from potential buyers in Australia and North America.

● Meanwhile Auckland horseman Brett Edwards was fined $500 by the Judicial Control Authority for a significant breach of the recently-adjusted whipping guidelines at Alexandra Park.

Piloting the horse he co-trains, Dauntless, Edwards was alleged by the Racing Integrity Unit to have used his whip in a striking motion

25 times inside the final 400 metres.

The strictly-enforced rule is no more than 10 strikes in that time.

Dauntless led for a majority of the straight, only being run down in the final stride by the Brent Mangos-trained and driven Roi Des Gitans.

●Horseman and Alexandra Park starter Frank Phelan is to have surgery on Saturday after breaking his arm on Thursday morning.

While breaking in a young horse, he was kicked, causing a displaced fracture to his forearm.

‘‘I was gearing it up and just got in the wrong position and it’s double-barreled me,’’ he said from his hospital bed.

Regular starter’s attendant Danny Blakemore filled in as the race starter at Alexandra Park on Thursday night and will continue to do so in Phelan’s absence.

‘‘It sounds like I will be out of action for at least four to six weeks,’’ said Phelan.

‘‘They tried to fix it last night without operating but it wasn’t possible, so I have to have a minor operation to get a plate and screws put in.’’
