Be quick and cool in summer

- KRIS BOULT

‘‘It’s the first time we can remember it being so hot so soon.’’ Sam Tyson - owner of Climate and Plumbing New Plymouth

It may not be the most fancy or even the most fantastic Christmas present out, but it will keep you cool this summer – provided you get in quickly.

We’re only a few days into summer and fans are already selling out across New Plymouth.

As December temperatures continue to soar it appears the sticky days and restless nights will continue for some time yet and New Plymouth retailers say fans and air conditioning units are already in high demand.

‘‘We’ve never had sales like this in November, if the weather stays like this then we’ll be busy in December too,’’ Craig Shotter, retail manager at Jones and Sandford Mitre 10 on St Aubyn St, said.

He said sales of fans were up on last year, and while he still had fans available he was expecting he’d sell out at some stage.

‘‘Usually the demand for fans got busy in January or mid February but depending on the weather I’d definitely expect to sell out at some stage,’’ Shotter said.

Owner of Climate and Plumbing New Plymouth, Sam Tyson, said the warmer weather meant they were busier than expected installing air conditioning units for customers in all parts of Taranaki.

‘‘It’s the first time we can remember it being so hot so soon,’’ Tyson said.

‘‘People are used to air conditioning at work and in their cars and are now wanting it in their homes,’’ she said.

Bailey Jackson, from 100% Appliances Waitara has also seen sales rise.

‘‘We’ve definitely sold more fans and had lots of quotes and been busy installing heat pumps over the last four weeks,’’ she said.

‘‘As soon as the colder weather dropped off we started to get busy.’’

Jackson said they were usually busiest before Christmas and around January and February.

‘‘Everyone wants a cool house for Christmas,’’ Jackson said.

It was a similar story at Mason Appliances in New Plymouth.

‘‘We’ve had a few people come in and get them and a few people asking about air conditioning as well,’’ staff member Mike Jury said.

‘‘We’re just about sold out of fans now, but we will order more in the coming days.’’
