Mike Watson looks at the latest round of TSB and TET awards

A$300,000 award means St John Stratford is one of the biggest benefactors from the latest round of Taranaki community grants. TSB Community Trust, and TET Community Trust returned more than $3.95m of grants to organisations and individuals in the region during the past 12 months.

TSB Community Trust gave out $2,316,322.61 to 201 organisations and individuals in Taranaki between October and December 2017.

TET Community Trust paid out $1,647,124 to 111 sport, education, religious, non-profit public facilities applicants between July and December 2017.

A further 37 conditional TSB grants will be paid out once the applicants meet certain criteria, TSB Community Trust chief executive Maria Ramsay said.

St John Stratford received $300,000 from TET towards the cost of a new $1.1m emergency and training centre to be built on Romeo St.

St John Stratford area committee chairman Peter McDonald said the grant is extremely generous.

‘‘We’re delighted to receive the grant which we will use to help in fundraising for the new service centre,’’ he said.

McDonald said the organisation currently worked from a 50 year old building near Stratford Hospital.

‘‘The building is inadequate to provide a service for the area we cover between Inglewood and Hawera and east Taranaki,’’ he said.

The $1.1m building project had been given approval by the regional trust board and a public fundraising campaign would soon be underway.

‘‘The $300,000 grant from TET will be matched by the committee using funds from the sale of assets.

‘‘A public fundraising campaign will soon begin to meet the remaining cost of the project.’’

The new building will have space to house four vehicles, St John cadet training facilities, staff accommodation for 24/7 operations, and meeting rooms, which will be available to other community groups to use.

‘‘It is essential we have a fully functional and adequate emergency medical service which can cover the whole of central Taranaki.

‘‘It’s an extremely positive and exciting development for Stratford and the outlying communities.’’

St John territory manager Roger Blume said the grant is a significant contribution towards building the new St John ambulance station in Stratford.

‘‘We look forward to updating the community on our fundraising progress for the build in due course,’’ he said.

Stratford District Council received $100,000 from TET, and $25,000 from TSB community trusts.

Among the TSB grants was $11,750 to help 12 Taranaki sports people who have been selected as national representatives in dressage, music, football, kneeboarding, athletics, indoor cricket, hockey, frisbee and climbing.

The TSB grants were distributed among a variety of community groups including arts, culture and heritage ($417,700), community wellbeing ($763,250), environment ($401,300), health and rescue services ($45,500), sports individuals ($11,750), learning ($347,503), projects ($37,129), recreation and sport ($292,190).
