Two for two with holes-in-one

Golfing pair Colin and Terri Heyes have completed the ultimate couple’s double – they both got a hole-in-one on the same round.
The New Plymouth husband and wife team already had a few holes-in-one before heading out for 18 holes on February 5 at the Ngamotu golf course.
But within a couple of hours they had two more.
Colin got his on the 9th hole, coincidentally the only hole he’s ever managed to get the magic single-hit score, while Terri got hers on the 14th.
The impressive feat wasn’t quite perfect.
Terri’s hole-in-one came after she hit a poor shot, lost the ball in long grass and was forced to use another ball.
So although she got a hole-inone, she actually scored a three.
‘‘It’s probably better because you think ‘oh this is going to add up to a big score’ and then you get a three,’’ Colin said.
‘‘Terri just looked at me in disbelief and kept saying ‘did you see it?’’’
Golf clearly runs in the Heyes’ blood.
Colin, Terri, and their two sons Steven and Logan have all represented Taranaki at some point and Steven has taken it further than that and gone pro.
‘‘Logan’s pretty good too, better than us. That’s what happens when you start playing young,’’ Colin said.
Colin thinks golf is all about luck though and if it is, Ngamotu is their lucky course.
‘‘None of us have had a hole-inone anywhere else,’’ he said.
Colin, who has a five handicap, has played golf since he was 14 and when he met Terri he laid out his priorities plain and true.
‘‘I told her ‘you better learn to play golf, otherwise you’ll be a golfing widow’,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s alright unless she beats us,’’ Colin said.
Terri picked up a club 15 years ago and has worked her way up to a nine handicap.
‘‘I’m doing OK,’’ Terri said. Even the staff at Ngamotu Golf Club couldn’t believe the pair’s luck, she said.
‘‘When we told the pro at the club he said ‘stop it you two.’
