Sales of best bangers blowing up

- JANE MATTHEWS

Graham Putt thinks he makes the best sausages in New Zealand and now it seems New Zealanders want to test his theory.

A usually steady Monday morning at the Mo¯ kau Butchery started sizzling for owners Graham and his wife Gloria following claims they had the best bangers in the country, and they’d share the recipe with whoever bought their business.

The butchery, which could be the most famous in New Zealand at the moment, sold nearly 10 kilogrammes of the Putt’s low fat sausages before lunch.

After a story about the butchery appeared on Stuff as well as in the Taranaki Daily News and the Sunday Star

Times and was seen by thousands of people, Gloria said they had a ‘‘burst’’ of customers.

‘‘We sold far more sausages than usual for that hour of the morning.’’

‘‘That’s unusual for a Monday,’’ Graham said.

The Putts have owned the butchery for nearly three decades but have decided to sell up so they can retire.

The Putts have managed to increase their profit by $20,000 each year in the past 18 of the 28 years the couple have owned it.

They have put their home and business up for sale for $450,000.

The pair have spent their time building the butchery’s reputation and they now see people travelling two hours to pick up some of their low fat sausages or old fashioned bacon - recipes for which they will sell along with the business.

Gloria said the pair were yet to hear from any potential buyers but she was sure they would soon enough.

The Putts’ commercial real estate manager Bruce Woodhead of Nai Harcourts said he’d had some interest after the story.

Woodhead had received two emails from people who were interested in the business by midday on Monday - one of which was from out of town.
