Region’s top trialists found
The Humes Taranaki Centre Championships at the MangaehuStratford dog trial club got off to a quiet start on Friday.
Competitor numbers were down on the opening day of the event but Saturday’s competition drew a good crowd. The sheep worked well in each event but were outstanding in the shorthead and yard. The top five Taranaki dogs in each of the four events went on to the championships runoff on Sunday. The run-off was well attended and spectators were treated to quality runs across all four events.
Sarah Scott from Eltham-Takau club was a maiden competitor until the weekend, when she and her dog Briar won the open straight hunt with 97.5. Also breaking into the open after being in the intermediate class was Rachel Dobson from the Whangamomona Club after a win with Thief in the straight hunt championship run-off. Dog trialling is one of the few sports where men and women compete on an even playing field.
