YOUR NEW ROAST

Tane Morgan and Adrianna Greenhill tell Virginia Winder about their new business - while enjoying a coffee or two.

After five years in the making, a new coffee roaster has opened its garage doors in New Plymouth’s West End.

Tane Morgan and Adrianna Greenhill are the force behind neighbourhood coffee hangout Pr%f & Stock Coffee Aotearoa, which they are running out of their Cutfield Rd garage.

On a wet Wednesday, a stream of people pop in to banter, buy beans and flat whites served in takeaway cups emblazoned with a tiki designed by Morgan, who is of Te Atiawa descent.

The couple began planning the coffee venture in 2013, but things – twins Indigo and Knox, nearly 4, and a health crisis – got in the way.

‘‘It’s been a bit of a hard road, but it’s plain sailing now,’’ he says.

The local community has backed them all the way, especially Logan and Marlise Gieni from Escape Coffee Roasters, who taught the couple how to roast beans and even sold them the Turkish roaster that sits in the back corner of the garage.

‘‘We have been overwhelmed with the support and a lot of people are happy we are here,’’ Greenhill says.

Now she is the main coffee roaster and Morgan, a highly rated barista, is the meet-and-greet man, a role he was wellknown for when he co-owned Caffe Blues in Westown.

After selling the cafe´ , he began teaching barista, front-of-house and bar skills at Witt.

He’s still there and plans to bring students to Pr%f & Stock to show them the art of coffee roasting. Also, at the end of each 17-week New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service, he wants to offer one student a mini internship.

The new coffee-roasting place has an ambience created with help from locals.

There are exposed wooden beams, brick wallpaper, a framed Tretchikoff print, hanging terrariums, fake grass, mustard-yellow seats from the old Mayfair theatre, a turntable playing Bowie and a movable bench. This was made using wood from an old picnic table that graced Morgan’s childhood garden and was loved by his late mum.

Also, there’s the aroma of freshly roasted and ground coffee. They import their green beans through John Burton and these come from Colombia, Brazil and Sumatra in Indonesia.

‘‘Hence, why I’m going there soon,’’ he says of the latter. ‘‘It’s more of a surf trip, but it’s by where we get the coffee beans.’’

Morgan and Greenhill’s dream is to buy their beans straight from farmers. In the meantime, they are happy to be serving certified organic beans, which relates to the ‘‘proof’’ part of their business name. ‘‘We can prove that everything we do is ethically sourced and sustainable,’’ he says.

They also aim to serve their coffees with fresh organic milk from Inglewood.

Already, they are providing beans to the Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge run by Nga¯ ruahine Iwi, Wai Coffee Bar + Deli at Strandon, Witt for training purposes, The Arizona in central New Plymouth, plus a few on the horizon. ‘‘Mach1 Yamaha is opening a takeaway window on Leach St in the coming weeks.’’

On Cutfield Rd, between St Aubyn St and Devon St West, people can pop in to Pr%f & Stock for a caffeine fix and a chinwag each Monday to Friday 6.30am to 1pm and Saturday, 8am to 1pm.
