A million feet of timber exported every month in boom time for port

❚ An average of one million feet of timber a month would initially be exported from Port Taranaki and it was expected the trade would continue for several years, the Waipari Timber Co announced.

❚ A new multi-wall paper bag system for the collection of refuse from commercial areas in New Plymouth began, with the city engineer, Mr N G Harris, saying all commercial premises would have to use the bags and no tins or cartons would be collected for disposal.

❚ After 22 years in practice at New Plymouth, Waverley-born medical practition­er, Dr H D Law, was to work for the Health Department in Auckland in an administra­tive capacity, acting as a liaison officer between medical practition­ers and the department.

❚ Taranaki and New Plymouth Old Boys’ medium-fast bowler D Kinsella won the Parkinson award for the best bowling performanc­e in Taranaki representa­tive cricket during the season and his club and representa­tive team mate, M Betts, won the Rothmans’ award for the most improved under-23 Taranaki cricketer.

❚ The North Taranaki Country Girls’ Clubs’ public speaking contest held in New Plymouth was won by the Mangaoraka club team of Geraldine Miller, Irene Meharry and Sandra Cartwright, Miller being judged the best speaker with Nola Worsley of Urenui second.

❚ Twenty-seven clubs contested the Taranaki Bowling Centre’s women’s interclub fours championsh­ip with Lepperton’s team of Mesd E Crowe, E Tamati, B Bint and M Henderson (skip) winning a tense final 21-18 against Patea’s combinatio­n of Mesd P Kelson, J Rowlands, A Bowen and M Maude (skip).

The Comedians I Deal In changed to the New Plymouth Readers’ Club and Mrs M Wilson was elected president.

❚ popular New Plymouth speedwsay competitor Ash King finally won a title, the New Plymouth Speedway Club’s stock car championsh­ip.
