Backing freedom campers

- Lila Smith New Plymouth

Hands up all Kiwis who since the 70s went on a big OE, buying cheap cars or vans on arrival then freedom camping where possible. Europe was a big destination.

Or freedom camping to get to concerts wherever they may be.

Well my hand is up along with thousands – that was and still is the culture, so therefore you don’t mind all the free camping that our Kiwi kids did, but just don’t bring it home here.

It’s so sad to see this ridiculous state of affairs, and we are friendly Kiwis (sic), what!

Judy Eva (Daily News Monday, September 10) said: ‘‘I am blown away by the nasty and spiteful remarks made about freedom campers’’, and just like Judy the selfishness and downright nastiness gets to me.

Kevin Harvey, same paper same day, said it all really, appreciate reading your words Kevin.

Well next time your granddaughter or grandson goes on an OE to Europe or globally and does the normal freedom camping trips, let’s hope they are not faced with the likes of some Taranaki people.

Millions gets pumped into advertising with images of snow peaks, sun and campervans and the likes – yep that’s a normal ad projected to the young in Europe and elsewhere, so here they come.

Well why don’t we get rid of Venture Taranaki, stop funding tourism in any way shape or form.

This council is caught unprepared and with its pants down due to most people sitting on their hands and just letting the flow – flow.

Tourism has been increasing yearly and its nice to erect shiny things to attract visitors – but to be unprepared or ignore signs is downright negligent.
