Air con star of fundraiser

Choir singers are hoping an upcoming performance will help make them cool.

The choir of around 40 is part the recently-formed Ha¯wera Theatre Trust Singers, who will be one of a number of groups and individuals performing at the Ha¯wera Memorial Theatre’s Christmas Cracker Variety Show in November and December.

The trust’s annual fundraiser will see any profits go towards the refurbishment of the theatre and the installation of air conditioning in the auditorium and stage areas – which could cost $100,000.

‘‘It’s been so hot in the theatre sometimes we’ve had people walk out,’’ said Russ Standing, trustee of Hawera Memorial Theatre Friends Trust.

‘‘The air conditioning is not a cheap thing to do and it’ll need a very specialised unit and some expertise to get it all set up. It’s not an easy [job], you can’t have it making noise either so there’s lots of issues surrounding it.’’

Standing said the trust was still waiting to get approximate costs and plans for the air conditioning but it was estimated to cost in the vicinity of $100,000.

However, it is something that is urgently required.

‘‘All fingers crossed, but it’ll all depend on the funds as to when it happens but hopefully that will be next year.’’

It will also be the first onstage performance for the choir, which was only formed in April this year, after a call for singers received a larger than expected turnout.

The cast of performers will also include musical director Peter Copeland, pianist Claudia Bluett, the Ha¯ wera Brass Band as well as the Ha¯ wera High School Band, Haley Old with Studio 2 Dance, Philippa Drinkwater, Shane Burgess, Debs Thomas and Lisa Pitcher. The shows will take place at the Ha¯ wera Memorial Theatre on November 30, December 1 (including a matinee) and December 2. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $15 for students.
