Choice surprises
I am gobsmacked that Cr Shaun Biesiek was not chosen to attend the alternative energy conferences in Aberdeen (Scotland), especially given its focus on hydrogen, and how it will revolutionise motoring.
Shaun is the principal dealer of Energy City Hyundai NP, so he’s already attended a number of conferences on hydrogen technology (including Hyundai launching a hydrogen car in NZ in 2019).
Shaun has the networks to ensure that something more tangible would come out of these overseas conferences, apart from a Memorandum of Understanding between NP and Aberdeen.
As an experienced councillor Shaun has the skills and mana to build civic relationships. It’s laudable the NPDC is pitching for NP to become the alternative energy hub of NZ.
I have nothing against Cr Stacey Hitchcock who was chosen to go to Aberdeen. In fact, I rate her.
She’s personable, well spoken and Jacinda-like. But these are energy conferences.
In my opinion, Shaun is more suited for this assignment.
If however, the priority is sending someone with the X-factor, with wonderful people skills, then Stacey is an inspired choice.
Queenstown is currently the frontrunner to become NZ’s hydrogen hub (especially with respect to car testing)—with NP not even on the radar. So our leaders have plenty of work to do.

NPDC responds:
A process was conducted whereby all Elected Members were asked to share an expression of interest in attending this industry investigation.
It explores New Plymouth becoming a World Energy City Partner, a MOU with Aberdeen City Council and research opportunities with commercial hydrogen operators, including the development of a hydrogen roadmap as part of our economic development strategy Tapuae Roa.
A selection panel, chaired by myself and with two other councillors, made the recommendation on which Elected Member would take part. Richard Jordan, deputy mayor
