Armed incident leads to nine charges

A man listed in court documents as a soldier remains in custody after an armed incident in South Taranaki last weekend.

Sean Michael McCallum was arrested on Sunday, November 4, in relation to a family harm matter on Austin Rd in Normanby, about six kilometres from

Ha¯ wera.

The incident called for the involvemen­t of the armed offenders squad (AOS) and McCallum was taken into custody after a couple of hours.

Court documents state McCallum is a 28-year-old soldier.

However, a spokeswoma­n for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) said ‘‘there is nobody by that name currently’’ employed by NZDF.

She was not whether he had past.

On Thursday, he appeared in the New Plymouth District Court on nine charges relating to the incident.

He is facing one charge each of unlawfully carrying a firearm, kidnapping, committing burglary able to served in say the with a weapon, wilful damage, failing to comply and two each of male assaults female and driving with a suspended licence.

According to court documents, it is alleged McCallum was in possession of a sawn-off shotgun. He is yet to plead to any of the charges.

McCallum is already the court on two other charges. before sets of

Defence lawyer Kylie Pascoe appeared on behalf of McCallum’s counsel, Julian Hannam, and sought a remand on the new charges.

She said there would be no bail applicatio­n made and instead the defendant consented to a remand in custody.

McCallum is set to reappear in court on November 23 to enter pleas on the new charges.
