A-League player racially abused

-

Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young is understood to have been racially abused by a Western Sydney Wanderers supporter during the club’s 2-2 draw on Saturday.

An investigation is under way into the incident in which a supporter allegedly yelled racist remarks towards Young during the match, before being ejected from the Glen Willows Sporting Complex in Mudgee.

The Roar goalkeeper, whose ancestry is Sri Lankan, was heard responding to the taunt.

He could be heard through the pitch-side microphones shouting ‘‘don’t call me a monkey you f ...... racist c...’’ in the 82nd minute of the match.

The supporter was immediately dealt with by security and kicked out of the stadium.

A Football Federation Australia spokesman confirmed the matter was being investigated but would await a full security report before making comment on the incident.

The Wanderers released a statement condemning the fan’s actions. ‘‘This individual is not to be welcomed back to any Wanderers fixture.’’

In the Fox Sports broadcast of the match, former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich called for a 10-year ban for the person, while former Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson wanted an even stronger message to be sent.

‘‘I think not 10 years, life. We can’t tolerate that sort of stuff,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Wellington Phoenix limped their way through a 2-0 loss to Melbourne City on Friday night.

Goals in each half to Ritchie de Laet and Bruno Fornaroli earned the hosts the victory, while the Phoenix had a second-half penalty shout for handball overturned after the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee.
