Sombre return for Leicester City
Leicester players led thousands of fans on a walk from the centre of the city to the club’s stadium as football returned home for the first time since the death of the owner who oversaw the team’s transformation into improbable English Premier League champions.
The march ended close to the scene of the helicopter crash next to the King Power Stadium that killed Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four other people after Leicester’s last home game two weeks ago.
Harry Maguire was among players who joined the ‘‘5000-1 walk,’’ which was named after Leicester’s title odds going into the 2015-16 season that ended with the trophy being collected.
Inside the stadium, before yesterday’s Premier League game against Burnley, fans watched in silence as a tribute video to Vichai was played.
Two minutes of silence honoured the five crash victims and also marked the centenary since the end of World War I.
The game with Burnley ended
0-0.
Elsewhere, Brazilian midfielder Felipe Anderson scored a second-half equaliser to rescue a point for West Ham in a
1-1 draw at Huddersfield in the English Premier League.
Anderson grabbed his third goal in two games by smashing home a 74th-minute rebound, after Alex Pritchard’s first goal of the season gave Huddersfield a halftime lead.
Huddersfield played arguably their best half of the season in the first period, twice hitting the goal frame, and will be disappointed not to have clinched back-to-back Premier League wins after beating Fulham 1-0 on Monday.
The draw left Huddersfield in the relegation zone after 12 games.
Southampton’s winless run in the English Premier League extended to eight games after conceding a late goal to draw with Watford 1-1 at home.
Jose Holebas equalised with a deflected strike nine minutes from time, leaving Southampton aggrieved having had a goal from Charlie Austin incorrectly ruled out for offside at 1-0. The draw left Southampton one place above the bottom three.
In other matches, Cardiff beat Brighton 2-1, Newcastle beat Bournemouth 2-1 and Tottenham pipped Crystal Palace 1-0.
