Coming on a big jet plane

- Stephanie Mitchell

After a slew of legendary baby boomer acts announced to perform this summer at one of New Zealand’s most beautiful venues, an act from a younger generation will play at TSB Bowl of Brooklands.

Australian folk stars Angus and Julia Stone will make their way to our shores next year for a series of concerts around the country.

They will perform in March, visiting Nelson, Napier and New Plymouth.

Known for their hits Big Jet Plane, Chateau, and Heart Beats Slow, the siblings grew up playing music with their family, Julia on trumpet, Angus on trombone, their sister Charlotte on saxophone, and their parents, Kim and John, on keyboards or guitar.

Angus and Julia joined forces to go professional in 2006 and have released four studio albums. The most recent, Snow, recorded at Angus’ cottage in Byron Bay, came out last year and saw them perform a sold-out tour in Australia.

The Stones’ relationship hasn’t always been smooth. They quit making music together in 2011 but were reunited by an intervention by legendary US producer Rick Rubin.

They have played in New Zealand many times before, having opened for Fleetwood Mac in 2015 and most recently in December 2017, but only played main centres Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

The Stones will be joined by singersongwriter Bic Runga as well as more artists still to be announced.

New Plymouth District Mayor Neil Holdom said it would be a relaxed ‘‘Sunday-arvo’’ atmosphere in the city’s picturesque venue.

‘‘I can’t think of a better way to spend the last of the summer sun than kicking back at the Bowl.

‘‘We need gigs that cater for a younger audience and this rock/indie sensation is just that, but also one not to be missed by all ages.’’

Angus and Julia Stone will bring a younger vibe to TSB Bowl of Brooklands after a summer of concerts by acts from an older generation with Toto, Jefferson Starship and Dragon playing the Bowl on January 11 and The Hollies on March 1.

The Harvest Moon concert series starts in Nelson on March 29, at Church Road Winery in Napier on March 30 and finishes at TSB Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth on March 31.

Earlybird tickets go on sale at noon on December 14 and general sale tickets at 9am on December 17. Tickets are available from endeavour. live.
