Family lifestyle near Egmont Village

- Mike Shaw

Saturday, December 15, 2018 A lifestyle property next door to long-standing family pastures on the outskirts of Egmont Village was a logical family purchase for Marlene and sons Thomas and Simon.

At the time, about six years ago, Thomas was looking to buy his first home, and Marlene saw potential in the property at 1346 Egmont Rd.

Neither of the sons was then in a position to own a property like this individually, but Marlene felt it would make a good family investment so they pooled their resources to buy it.

There was plenty to appreciate in the package of land, main home and cottage. It was located just a couple of minutes up Egmont Rd from the main highway at Egmont Village, the main house presented well as a character single-bay villa with pleasing contemporary improvements, and the separate cottage had been a popular bed-andbreakfast add-on for previous owners. Storage and workshop space was a bonus, with a separate double garage that had a large upstairs room to satisfy hobby or extra bedroom needs, and a large three-bay shed nearby that could work for any number of lifestyle options.

Thomas actually had good memories of this home from years ago. ‘‘I used to come to birthday parties here when I was five,’’ he recalls.

He promptly moved in and gathered flatmates to fill the villa and cottage. ‘‘I’ve had up to seven friends living here,’’ he says. ‘‘It fits a lot of people comfortably.’’

Comfort comes from the enhancements made to this villa by its various owners.

Initially, you could assume it has been sitting here since it was built in the late 1890s. Actually, it’s a relatively recent addition to this landscape, less than 40 years ago.

The first owners here moved the villa from Carrington St in the city and developed a spacious, comfortable family lifestyle. Extra living areas were added and a large well-appointed central kitchen installed. Adjacent to the house, a double garage was built with a useful loft room or studio space above, while across the driveway a small cottage was built for visiting family – it was named Araheke after that little stream below.

The original developers built the cottage for parents who came out from the UK for three months each year. So they gave it real appeal, with its separate setting looking over the stream and pastures beyond, and a deck and verandah

It’s no wonder the cottage subsequently bjlecame a permanent rental income for Marlene, Thomas and Simon; what a great little spot for a tenant to settle into. The present tenant is staying on for another couple of months or so, and their departure will allow new owners to decide their own use for the cottage.

There’s an immediately pleasing feel of character comfort and rural relaxation on arrival at this property. A short drive in from the road leads to a limestone chip turning area in front of the villa and its rustic board-and-batten garage. The two are conveniently linked by a covered path with trellis sides.

Across the driveway from the coupled buildings is the board-and-batten clad cottage, set among screening plantings on the edge of the slope above the stream. Marlene has planted along the stream banks from the cottage to the villa and it’s now an attractive, lush green outlook for both homes. Two timber bridges span the small stream and allow easy access to the grassy www.taranakidailynews.co.nz
