Motorola flip phone making a comeback
Hold the phone, 90s kids.
Twenty nineteen has just peaked because the Motorola Razr flip phone is making a comeback . . . sort of.
According to a Wall St Journal report, tech company Lenovo and Verizon have teamed up to create a modern version of the much-loved mobile. But it won’t be cheap.
Complete with foldable display, the new model is reported to cost about US$1500 (NZ$2200).
It won’t be easy to get your hands on one of these nostalgic designs either – only about 200,000 units of the new and improved Razr are going to be made.
Details on the design have been kept under wraps, because the phone is yet to be officially announced. However, it’s reported the phone will have a display that bends in the middle with a hinge, allowing it to close.
Foldable displays aren’t a new concept, with electronics company Royole unveiling the world’s first flexible display device in November, 2018. Samsung wasn’t far behind, releasing a new folding smartphone shortly after.
‘‘We have entered a new dimension,’’ said Justin Denison, Samsung’s senior vice-president of mobile product marketing, at the new product’s announcement.
The race to be the most innovative technology company is well under way, and with the announcement of a favourite tech must-have from the early 2000s, Lenovo and Verizon seem to be out in front.
At the moment, there’s no news on when or if the new device will be available in New Zealand.
This isn’t the first attempt to bring back the much-loved flip phone, but time will tell if this will be the most successful attempt.
