Sunny Oakura home has bonus garaging

- MIKE SHAW

Saturday, January Homes are not usually bought for the garaging; but in the case of 68 Wairau Rd in Oakura, the space for at least five vehicles could well be a deciding factor.

From the street, the house is an attractive contemporary brickclad residence, with the conventional double garage integrated into the design. There’s a second vehicle crossing from the street, however, to a driveway sloping down behind the house where you discover the extra garage space.

It’s a three-bay garage, with a double door and a single for the various vehicles. The single is higher and wider to accommodate a caravan, motorhome or boat.

It was the latter that appealed to Brenda’s Dad about 15 years ago when he was looking at property after retiring off the farm. ‘‘Dad had a boat, so his first priority was sheds,’’ Brenda explains.

‘‘He walked straight down and checked out the sheds. There was even a shower and toilet down there, so the man cave was ticked.’’

A generous concrete parking and turning area made it easy to manoeuvre vehicles or allow visitors to park off-street.

‘‘He called Mum and said ‘You’d better come and look at this’. Luckily, the house was just what she wanted. It was one level and low maintenance.’’

While the house was located in residential Oakura, it offered a pleasing view from the living areas and back deck across to distant farmland. It didn’t feel hemmed in. ‘‘There were no houses at the back when they first came here, but it is still a nice outlook.’’

Brenda’s Dad passed away about 10 years ago, but her Mum continued to enjoy life here until her recent move into a retirement village.

‘‘There’s always something happening on Wairau Rd and she enjoyed the activity; there are Oakura. 68 Wairau Rd,

Low-maintenance gardens meant little effort was needed to keep the grounds tidy. And the supportive community of Oakura village was appreciated. ‘‘Mum felt very secure with good neighbours and the supportive community here.’’

The location was appreciated when the grandchildren visited, Brenda adds. ‘‘Straight down the road to swimming and fishing.’’

The open-plan living areas also worked well when family got together here; the sunny back

The kitchen and dining areas look out to Wairau Rd and enjoy the first rays of the morning sun. The home is well positioned to make the most of the sun, which continues to warm the living areas throughout the day. ‘‘This is a hot house,’’ Brenda says, with a smile.

Both the front door and the sliding door from the lounge to the deck are fitted with locking screen doors that allow fresh air without compromising security.

The kitchen is original in its powder-blue finish with rimu trim and terracotta tiles underfoot, and offers plenty of bench and cupboard space.

Along the hallway are the home’s three double bedrooms, the family bathroom, and the internal access to the double garage. The bathroom and master bedroom ensuite have both been upgraded recently with new stone-look tiling, a glass corner shower in the main bathroom and a spa bath in the ensuite with a shower over that.

Off the master bedroom is a small hobby room that Brenda’s Mum used for her sewing, but could easily become an office or a dressing room. www.taranakidailynews.co.nz
