Whale Oil blogger Cam Slater suffers a stroke

- Nick Truebridge

Controversial blogger Cameron Slater has been left partially disabled following a stroke, with a lengthy post on his Whale Oil blog blaming the media for making his health problems worse.

The post, written by a Whale Oil staffer, revealed Slater first suffered a stroke late last October and was readmitted to hospital shortly after.

It blames a journalist for the second hospital trip.

‘‘Unbelievably (or perhaps not), after the first hospitalisation for the stroke, one reporter attempted to get hold of Cam’s private medical records, which had been provided to the court in strictest confidence,’’ it reads.

‘‘The stress that the reporter’s actions caused, and the legal action required to stop them, caused Cam to have another medical event just a day after being discharged from hospital after his severe stroke.’’

The stroke left Slater paralysed down his right side and his speech has been impaired.

‘‘Progress is being made, but it is very long and very hard,’’ the blog post stated.

‘‘Cam cannot concentrate, read or take phone calls for more than 10 or 15 minutes a day.

‘‘He cannot cope with loud noises, background noises or being interrupted.

‘‘He certainly does not have the ability to form complex thought structures.

‘‘The vision in Cam’s right eye has also been affected.’’

Though the Whale Oil blog and Slater’s meat company, Whale Oil Meat, are thriving, the post came with a plea for help.

‘‘Much as it pains us to ask others for help, we have concluded that we must ask for your assistance in helping Cam pay the huge legal bills he has incurred as a result of having to defend himself from the lawfare of his enemies.’’
