New firefighting recruits sought
Career firefighter Jason Crowe loves the challenge and excitement created by not knowing what his day will bring.
Crowe, a senior station officer at New Plymouth, is a member of the national recruitment team along with Blake Marston – and the brigade is looking for two new recruits.
‘‘The aim of this recruitment campaign is to encourage a diverse range of applicants – we are looking for women and men who bring individual life experience skills to the role.
‘‘If you can think on your feet, are driven to succeed, have a genuine compassion for others, are fit and healthy then firefighting might be the career for you.’’
Crowe said every day was different and he loved the challenge. ‘‘It’s an exciting role, no two days are the same.
‘‘From when you turn up you never know what’s coming, whether it’s an emergency incident like a car crash, a fire, natural disaster or medical calls.’’
He joined the fire brigade 14 years ago, serving three years around the Wellington region before moving to New Plymouth 11 years ago.
‘‘Basically as a little kid I had always imagined myself as being a firefighter one day.’’
Crowe said they were looking for recruits with a broad range of life experiences and skills and they didn’t need to be superhuman.
‘‘It’s the diversity of our people that enable us to provide such an excellent service.’’
It was rewarding to help people in the community during their time of need.
‘‘Someone is having a bad day when they call 111 and generally we go to turn that around and that’s very satisfying.’’
Crowe said recruits also needed to be a team player, have good communication skills, strong morals and ethics and a can-do attitude.
A recruitment information session will be held at the New Plymouth fire station this Sunday between 3.30pm and 4.30pm and applications will close on March 4.
