Scholarship set up in teenager’s name

- Jane Matthews

Friends and family of Blair Magon have set up a scholarship in his name.

Next year 32 boys from the New Plymouth Boys’ High School will travel to Europe to play football, and the scholarship will support one of them to go in Blair’s place.

The 14-year-old was an avid football player and would have loved to have travelled in one of the two school teams taking part in the tour, which will go to Spain, Manchester, Madrid and London.

The trip was announced two months after Blair’s death from meningococcal strain C, and his coach, Paul Morris, Paul’s wife Nikki, and other family friends came up with the Blair Magon Scholarship to help another student get there.

And Nikki’s going all out – she’s shaving her head on March 23 to raise money for the cause.

‘‘I love my hair... it’s a big sacrifice for me,’’ she said.

She also wanted to raise awareness and said she believed she was one of the many people – like Blair’s parents – who hadn’t completely understood the disease.

‘‘I was so shocked, and I think I still am now,’’ Nikki said.

‘‘If we can save one more kid then it’s definitely worth it.’’

A Givealittle page has been created for Nikki Morris’ head shave, which is happening at 2pm on March 23 at Green Door Cafe, New Plymouth.
