A big weekend of events

-

It was a busy weekend of events for New Plymouth.

It began on Friday evening when nearly 50 people took part in the JetCharm retro bicycle race.

Twelve teams of four people took part in the 20 minute annual relay race, which sees them navigating an obstacle course on a closed-off section of Egmont St.

Event organiser Shaun Conaglen said it was a beautiful evening.

‘‘Water balloons were thrown and everyone got wet and had a few drinks after,’’ Conaglen said.

The Spotswood College staff team took out the event, which was staged in conjunction with The New Plymouth District Council’s Let’s Go initiative.

On Saturday the annual Taranaki Multi-Ethnic Extravaganza parade stopped traffic in the centre of New Plymouth. The event, celebrating the region’s diversity through food, dance and language then moved to the New Plymouth Raceway where entertainment, food stalls and family activities were held.

Saturday also saw the 40th annual Mountain to Surf Marathon, which went off with out a hitch.

The event, hosted by TET Athletics Taranaki, started at the Egmont National Park gates and finished at the Marine Park in Waitara.

Shannon-Leigh Litt, 40, was the female marathon winner with a time of 3:01:03 and Nathan Coombes, 29, was the male marathon winner with a time of 2:33:37.
