Relax with uninterrupted sea views

- Mike Shaw

Saturday, March Mention of a seafront setting will often bring to mind the archetypal image of blue sky, yellow sun and sparkling waters. But life along the shore also has moods, as last week’s visit to 25 Tiromoana Crescent proved.

After weeks of hot sun and clear skies, the weather moved in and clouds and rain turned the outlook here at Bell Block to a grey ceiling over a grey sea. The monochrome was relieved only by the tumbling whitewater on the offshore reef and the muted green of the Norfolk pines standing sentinel on the grassy reserve.

And it was good. There’s a sense of comfort standing inside a warm, dry house and looking out on a rain-swept scene like this.

That variation is something Graciela has appreciated in her years of living here. ‘‘There’s a different mood every day,’’ she says. ‘‘Some days calm, some days rough, some days blue, some days green. Breathtaking sunsets, and nights with a magnificent full moon reflected on the water. Full-arch rainbows are common, too. I never know what I will see next. It is nature’s show from the comfort of home.’’

And it’s not an empty sea. ‘‘There are a lot of boats, surfers, windsurfers, kite surfers, paddle boarders. We even see orca passing by, there have been black swans out there, and we see penguins occasionally.’’

Graciela sat up here one morning recently and counted 40 boats heading out to sea. ‘‘It was perfect conditions for fishing. With the boat ramp at the beach, it is a wonderful opportunity for boat owners.’’

The popular Coastal Walkway finishes here just now, although there are plans to eventually extend it through to Waitara. Weather doesn’t stop people using the walkway, Graciela notes. ‘‘Even this morning, though it was raining, people were walking their dogs.’’

This house sits at what was the culde-sac end of Tiromoana Crescent, which could only be reached from 25 Tiromoana Crescent, Bell Block.

Wills Rd. Subdivision development linked the street to suburban Bell Block about five years back and that’s now given owners here easier access to its shopping and cafes, schools, parks, and sports facilities such as rugby grounds and the Taranaki Cycle Park.

Built in the 1970s, the house presents a plastered two-storey frontage to the street, with weatherboard cladding on sides and rear. Double and single garages at street level are separated by the sheltered formal entry and a foyer that features a panel of glass blocks that lets light in while maintaining privacy. The living and bedroom areas are all on the level above.

A stairwell rises from the foyer to the main living spaces either side that take in the view. On a fine day, you can step out through stacker sliding doors to the concrete terrace to enjoy an alfresco appreciation of the elevated setting. The low plastered parapet across the front of the terrace maintains the view for people sitting inside.

Graciela says it is easy for family and friends to gather here for barbecues and festive occasions, with room to spread out and views from inside or out.

The large windows fill the lounge spaces with light while they frame the views, and the recently refreshed offwhite decor enhances the sense of space. New carpet in a neutral, earthy colour will make it easy for new owners to just move their furniture in and enjoy life immediately.

The woodburner in the lounge keeps life cosy through the winter, and its wetback helps keep water heating costs down. An HRV system enhances ventilation throughout the house.

The kitchen, through the door at the end of the lounge area, is another light-filled space. It pours in through the greenhouse window over the sink bench that has an appeal for Graciela in the evening as well as daytime. ‘‘On a clear night, I can look up and see the Southern Cross,’’ she explains.

You can also look back from the sink bench through the lounge to that sea view.

The kitchen is finished in an offwhite colour, but has new timber-look vinyl planking on the floor to add visual warmth and texture. Laundry services are located off the back of the kitchen.

A hallway leads to the three double bedrooms and separate bathroom and toilet. The master bedroom and middle guest bedroom both enjoy a view-shaft to the sea through a sheltered courtyard. The master bedroom opens out to that courtyard, where bougainvillea, cactus and succulents add a semi-tropical feel.

The view-shaft through the courtyard is shared with a raised sitting area at the back of the property, which also gives you a look back to a full view of the mountain.

The decision to let all this go has not been easy, says Graciela. ‘‘But it is an opportunity for another family to enjoy happy years at the property or to make the most out of its potential.’’

Remax Team Realty consultant Anne Wilson is marketing the property which she says should attract prompt interest with its prime coastal setting, extra garaging and views. ‘‘This won’t last long,’’ she emphasises. enjoy the www.taranakidailynews.co.nz
