Hatred has no place here
I am writing this letter in the capacity of a concerned citizen of Aotearoa and resident of Taranaki. ‘‘As-Salaam-Alaikum’’
It’s the equivalent of ‘‘Kia ora’’. It means peace be with you. This is how the Muslim world greets each other. This wish for peace was shattered in the most ghastly and horrific way in Aotearoa on Friday afternoon.
The abhorrent xenophobic mass shooting in Christchurch not only destroyed the families of those killed and wounded, it also deeply scarred every person proud to call New Zealand home.
As an immigrant into this welcoming nation, I most strongly condemn this heinous act. I am in admiration of how first responders, different communities and sections of our society are reaching out to those affected.
On Saturday evening, when the Muslim Association of Taranaki reconvened at the Islamic Centre, their leaders had some clear messages:
Respond to hate with kind-heartedness Reciprocate the love and support offered by the community
Be more open to the wider community
Many people in Taranaki are wondering how they can help and express solidarity with the Muslim community.
A candlelight vigil has been organised for Friday, March 22, at 7pm at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands. In case of wet weather, it will be held in the TSB Stadium. It would be wonderful to see your support there.
Spread kindness and love. Hatred has no place in our world.
Arohanui,
Arun Chaudhari, Taranaki
