Realignment for roundabout

-

Three of the four approaches to Ha¯ wera’s main roundabout will be realigned during a 10-week project to make the area safer.

Work will begin today, with new concrete islands also being installed alongside measures to improve visibility and encourage drivers to take more care.

In an emailed statement, acting New Zealand Transport Agency systems manager Mark Owen said there had been 18 crashes at the roundabout since 2014.

At least half of these crashes were caused by drivers failing to give way, he said.

‘‘Eight of the crashes resulted in people being hurt, including two cyclists who were seriously injured,’’ Owen said. ‘‘The improvements we are making will encourage drivers to slow down as they approach the roundabout, helping to avoid further crashes and reducing the severity if they do happen.’’

‘‘Lower speeds at this intersection will make it safer for everyone using it,’’ Owen said.

The works are expected to take

10 weeks, weather dependent, he said.

A temporary road layout and

30kmh speed limit will be in place while the work is carried out. At times, southbound traffic on State Highway 3 will be diverted onto Fantham St and Turuturu Rd.

Traffic travelling north on Glover Rd will be diverted onto Turuturu Rd and Waihi Rd.

Pedestrians will not be affected and cyclists can follow posted diversion routes or dismount and use the footpath through the works area, Owen said.

Motorists were advised to expect delays and use alternative routes where possible, especially at peak times, he said.

‘‘We appreciate everyone’s patience while we make this busy intersection safer.’’
