Gang pad shooting-accused in custody

-

A father and son have been remanded into custody following the shooting of a New Plymouth gang pad.

An 18-year-old was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly shot at a Mongrel Mob gang house in Moturoa, before crashing a stolen car during a police chase.

Shortly after the reported shooting, the vehicle was spotted on Cowling Rd and a police pursuit ensued, at times reaching 80kmh.

The teen, who was known to police, was the sole occupant of the stolen Mazda MX5 when it slammed backwards into a concrete wall about 1.30pm in Tukapa St, Westown, about 150 metres from Francis Douglas Memorial College.

Police said the vehicle had been stolen two days before.

The teenager was arrested and taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with back injuries.

Shortly after, his father was arrested near the hospital.

Police said the arrest was not related to the earlier shooting or the pursuit.

The father briefly appeared in New Plymouth District Court on Friday facing charges of obstructing police, disorderly behaviour and assault with a blunt instrument.

He sought bail but was then stood down while police formalised their opposition.

However, he did not return before the judge and was remanded into custody.

The teenager was scheduled to appear but instead consented to a remand in custody.

He is facing charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, commission of a crime with a firearm, failing to stop for police, refusing to give a blood specimen, two charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, one of raping a female over the age of 16, theft, and breaching supervision conditions.

Bail hearings have been scheduled for the pair.

The father is to appear on November 7 and his son on November 14.
